Change

I never blogged about it, but just in case you didn't know, I left my position as an Assistant Children's Pastor at Fellowship Church (FC) about 4 weeks ago. When I was hired I was asked to commit for a full year and then see how I felt about it. I knew, and FC knew before I started that I was called to Student Ministry, but I really wanted to try this position to learn how FC worked and how they ran their Children's ministry. After a year of constant learning (seriously, I learned something new every week there) I knew it was time to leave.

While I enjoyed my role at FC Kids (what they call their children's dept) it completely confirmed my calling and my desire to work with students. So, I left that position in pursuit of a student ministry (SM) position.

While I'm in between jobs I'm doing contract photoshop and after effects work on the side. I'm very excited to see where God leads me.

School is going well. I'll be done with my 3rd semester here in a few days. We're in final exams right now and I'm blogging when I should be studying. (Isn't it amazing the stuff you'll find to do INSTEAD of studying?) This semester I switched from the MDiv to the MACE degree. So 3 down and we'll see how many more to go.

All of that to say, I've been going to a new church these past 4 weeks. It is the church that my fiancee has been going to for over a year now. The pastor is Matt Chandler. It's basically this tiny little church in Highland Village, TX which is north DFW that runs around 5,000 people on a weekend. It is called The Village. Right now my only involvement is going to service. As long as I'm in DFW and still looking for a SM position I'll be attending here. Then after that, you can guarantee that I'll be listening to the podcasts.

I'll explain it to you like I explained it to a friend on the phone a few minutes ago. Some of you may know that I am a huge fan of Andy Stanley's preaching. Well before attending the Village, by far I thought Andy Stanley was the best speaker in the country I'd heard. Well, after spending a month under Matt Chandler, his preaching blows Andy Stanley's preaching out of the water. Matt Chandler is THAT anointed and THAT gifted. (i know it's not a competition)

So obviously I recommend his podcasts. Where to start?
For anyone, click here, entitled "What is Truth?"
If you're a guy, I dare you to click here, for part 1, of a series called "The Role of Men". Here's Part 2 & Part 3.

Recently, he's been walking his church through their 5 foundations. Check out the podcast page for this series and all of their podcasts since 2005 by click here. Oh, he also preached one called "Nine Pastoral Prayers" which is a sermon about the nine prayers he and his staff have been praying for the church. They're all fantastic!

Speaking of Churches Endorsing Candiates...

At Fellowship, 2 weekends ago, our worship pastor was giving announcements right after Ed finished speaking and he/Dex said, "Now as most of you know, our church doesn't usually support a political candidate, but since the Texas primaries are just a few days away, we wanted to make this announcement..." And then he pointed to the screens and played this....

Pretty funny huh? The next weekend, they played this one...

Churches Cannot Endorse Candidates

I didn't know this. The church I grew up in never did endorse any particular candidate but simply pushed all of its attendees to get out and vote. I just thought it was a decision the church made just to stay neutral.

It turns out, "The tax code bans churches from participating in or intervening in a political campaign. Violations can result in the loss of a church’s tax exempt status."

I read that here.

Hmmm. That's good to know.

Shot Glasses For Jesus

Here's a link to a news story about a church in North Carolina that is trying to reach people by handing out shot glasses that say "Give us a shot!" to people in bars.

Think that's too far?

A Pastor With Guts

Mark Driscoll has launched a website to let people decide on what his first 9 sermons of the new year will be on. He basically said, "Ask anything. Yes, anything!" Then through this website people will vote on the top 9 questions and those will be what he will speak on in the first 9 weeks of 2008.

So go put in your vote! There are some really good questions on there.

Funny Church Signs

I've seen a lot of funny church signs that say things unintentionally. This was a new one.

I jacked this from a fellow SWBTS Blogger, Carl Peterson. Click here for his blog.

Dr. Ross on Parenting

Dr. Richard Ross is the reason I chose Southwestern Seminary over New Orleans Seminary. Basically... he's the man when comes to Student Ministry (hence the reason I'm at Southwestern)!

Here he is teaching a seminar on how to mobilize parents to impact their children for Christ. It's so powerful. If you're a parent, or ever planning on being a parent, this is worth your time. While in this seminar he's speaking to pastors about how to impact the parents in their churches, the understanding of these truths is still the same and changed even the way I plan on being a father in the future.

Here's a link to some info on Dr. Ross. Click here.

Update May '07

School's been out for 3 weeks. For some crazy reason though, they have not posted grades yet. ULL, a school of 17,000 students has all of their grades posted within 3 days of the last final. SWBTS, a school of 3,000 students takes more than 3 weeks.

But I'm not too nervous. I should come out with surprisingly good grades for my first semester of Masters level classes. I'll post them when I get receive them.

Other than that, really, life's been good. I had a close friend the other day ask me what he could be praying for me for, and for the first time in a really long time, I had nothing truly pertinent that I needed praying for (outside of the everyday things). There were no big needs. I can always use prayer for finances, school, and work, but there was no huge problem that needed immediate prayer. It was a weird realization.

Work is going well. Fellowship Church is amazing. The staff are amazing. The volunteers are amazing. And of course the 2nd and 3rd graders I help pastor are amazing. This job has been a huge blessing. I've had tons of exposure to great ideas of how to do ministry and how to communicate with volunteers and how to teach children about Christ. I'm loving it.

I got the weekend off from work too and got to go home to Lafayette to see the fam and friends. Man I miss Lafayette. I always will. There is no Church like East Bayou. That place is amazing. It was a blessing to see my friends there.

Fort Worth is home now. It's a funny feeling. Driving in to Lafayette, there was something different. Yes it was my home town, but it wasn't my home. My home is here in Fort Worth. It's funny. I don't know if that makes sense though, hmmm.

New Job

Since my shift in "how" I was going to approach seminary changed about a month ago (click here to read that post), I started looking for a full-time ministry position. I've been interviewing for about a month now with Fellowship Church at their Grapevine campus.

Well today I officially started. The position is their 2nd and 3rd Grade Assistant Children's Pastor position. My main responsibilities are helping teach and lead on the weekends, preperation for the weekend during the week, and supporting our 2nd and 3rd grade pastor in whatever he needs me to do.

I've not talked a lot about it b/c I wanted to land the job first. This is a huge answer to prayer so I do want it to be clear that props go to God for hooking me up with the op to work at an amazing church with some amazing people there, both staff and volunteers. I know my time at fellowship will give me TONS of positive experience and exposure into children's ministry, team work, creativity, and lots more. I'm stoked to say the least.

I still covet your prayers as I attempt to finish this semester (I'm half way through and rocking and rolling) and offer as much as possible in my new position.

Mid-February Update

So obviously the amount of posting I do now that I'm in school has dramatically decreased. My apologies, but that is the way it will most likely be for a while.

So here's what's been going on. I need your prayers. I've made a big shift in my strategy for finishing school. My original game plan was to take a full load of classes and work part time. But after being here, learning what it cost to live here, and not having a job yet, I'm realizing how much debt I'd have to incur to finish this degree in 3-3.5 years. A big factor in that was that I did not get the Outback Steakhouse job. They offered it to me but I did not pass the menu test. I was hesitant to tell people I was offered the job b/c I knew I still had to pass the test before I officially worked there. And so I crammed for the test, but didn't pass.

I knew that I would have to incur some debt to get this degree, but I soon realized how much debt that would be. So I started calling some older guys that I go to for wisdom and asking them, if going into debt for the sake of getting through school in 3 years was worth it. They all said the same thing... don't.

So then my other option is the one that I've now switched to... Work full time and take classes as I can afford them and finish school in a 5-6 year time frame. And if I'm going to be working full time, and for that many years, then I obviously want to invest that time into a church ministry. So... I started circulating my resume this week, and am now looking for a full-time ministry position.

This may not sound like a big switch, but it has been a tough week trying to make these big picture type decisions. My financial situation is insecure and I've been on my knees more than ever this week asking God what to do. I'd COMPLETELY appreciate your prayers as I proceed with this decision.

Classes have gotten a LOT better. The first week was completely overwhelming b/c of the load and the language. I swear I couldn't understand a thing my teachers were talking about the first week of classes, but it's gotten a lot better. I've gotten caught up on most, not all though, of the lingo and scholarly language that they talk in.

Other than that, I'm just enjoying the weather, and hanging out with my new friends here and missing my old friends and family back home.

Here are some pics from this weekend. I helped out a Disciple Now at a church called Fielder Road Baptist Church in Arlington, TX, about 20 minutes from campus. Heath Hudspeth, who helped me out with Middle School in Lafayette, moved to TN a couple of years ago and went to a church there called German Town Baptist Church where he volunteered in their student ministry. There Heath volunteered fora guy on staff named Mark Cole who is now the Student Pastor at Fielder. I was telling Heath about my new game plan for school and he gave me Mark Cole's number and Mark invited me to lead a group of 8th grade boys for their D-Now weekend. It's been since November since I've gotten to hang with students so needless to say I had a blast being around them. Here are a few pics from the weekend...

The last pic is of my long lost little brother named Zak(He is one of the most hilarious people I've ever met. He had me laughing the whole weekend). We look alike, we talk alike, we like the same music, we told the same exact jokes, and the best part.... We're both lactose intolerant! We're long lost bothers, we know it! :)

Church Hopping in DFW Post 1 - First-Time Guests

So basically, in Lafayette, on a Sunday morning, I've never been to another church besides East Bayou. Never. Oh wait, I spoke at FBC Broussard once for their DNow, but other than that I have NO CLUE what other churches do on Sunday morning.

SOOOOO, here's what I've been doing while in Fort Worth. This is one of the reasons I chose FW over New Orleans... My first weekend here I went to 2 churches. My second weekend, I went to 3 different churches. And this weekend I went to 3 again. It's been awesome.

It's been a blast. I'm intentionally going to churches that I know I won't even like, b/c I still want to see first-hand how they do church. But here's what I've gotten the most out of so far...

Just in the past 3 weekends, my perspective of how to treat visitors has TOTALLY CHANGED! Yeah you can talk about what your church beleives and what your worship is like and all that stuff but here is the ONE thing it comes down to. People. I used to say that I'd never join a traditional church. After these 3 weeks, that has changed. I'd join a traditional church in a heartbeat IF, I wanted to be around it's people bad enough. In a hearbeat.

Lifechurc.tv is the church that's been the best so far (and guess where I've been back every week). I attended the church the first time, and before I knew it, one of the pastors is taking me to lunch that day. Lifechurch immeadiately gave me the op to meet as many people as I wanted, or to be left alone. Some people want to get thrown in the deep end of what's happening and other want to just stand in the back and watch. Too many of the churches I've visited assume I want to stand in the back and watch. But I don't. But I'm also not going to jump in without an invitation. Yes they are only a church of 400 people and it's WAY easier at that size to reach out to everyone, but it's just as important for the mega-churches. It's make or break. People aren't coming back if they didn't like the people at your church.

I've attended one church on Saturday night for 3 weekends in a row. It's easy for me to slip in, go to service, and slip out without ever having to have a conversation with anyone. Yeah, a TON of people go there, but I pose this question to myself to figure out how to answer for the next time I'm involved in church leadership. How do you reach out to everyone, when you're 100 strong, or 1,000 strong.

First time guests are NASTY scared, and shy and have NO CLUE what the heck is going on. They don't know where the bathrooms are at, where they need to go, who can they talk to or how to get out of the parking lot. I think it needs to be OVERLY obvious what a church offers to a first-time guess. Some of the websites I've checked out take 5 minutes to find out when they're services are. Once I find the page, then I have to decifer they're excel spread sheet they use to post it. We need to beat guests to any questions they'd ask. If they want to talk your ear off let them. If they want to be left alone, leave 'em alone. Don't assume anything.

I do know this. I miss East Bayou. Yeah our speaking is great (and I don't just say that b/c he's my dad :) ), our music is kicking, but I miss not being able to make it out of the auditorium of our church without being asked, "Hey, how are you doing?" and not just "Hello, it's good to see you. I'll see you later." I mean an actual conversation.

I'm still in touch with a few people who've been members of east bayou and then have to move out of state for whatever reason, and every single one of them has yet to find a place like East Bayou. I haven't found one here yet. Some are close. And if I do find one here, I won't hesitate to join.

Yeah good music is cool. Yeah great speaking can change your life. But I guarantee your visitors will be back if they like the people and they are met where they're at.

Churches I've visited...

Lifechurch.tv Fort Worth Campus
This church is amazing. The music is live and the sermon is live too, but the pastor is on a screen and he's live via sattelite from the mothership church in Oklahoma. They meet in a school where they tear down and set up for every weekend. And then on Wednesday too for their youth service. They run about 400 people on a weekend. All of their campuses combined they run about 18,000.

Fellowship Church
Fellowship church is basically the biggest production church out there. Let me put it in perspective for you. VH1, the channel, rents equipment from these guys. Their media is amazing. Their videos put MTV to shame, and their music is like a Coldplay concert every weekend. But the thing I like the most about them is that it's all done very simply. Everyone gets it. Yeah their high in production, but it's not a distracting kind of production. It's a supportive type of production. It's just done very well. Their pastor, Ed Young, is a master at fishing. He's brilliant at simply sharing the gospel in a way that makes sense and everyone gets. this church I think runs arounf 18,000 on a weekend.

Wedgewood Baptist Church
I visited their college/career group this morning, but they weren't in full swing b/c of the holidays. I'll probably go back and check them out again. I'm told their pastor breaks out in song in the middle of his sermons. I look forward to seein that. :)

University Baptist Church
This church is on TCU's campus, but I couldn't find any college and career aged people there. I figured b/c it was on TCU's campus that's where all of their students would go. I was wrong.

Google It

Here's my new answer to every question...

Google it!

How do you dress up for an 80's themed party? Google it.

How do find out where the nearest goodwill is at? Google it.

How do you find out the weather in Russia? Google it.

How do you find out what's wrong with cousin Ed? Google it.

What are the lyrics to that new Fatboy Slim song? Google it.

Next to Apple, I think Google is probably my favorite company. My first born is going to be named "Steve Jobs Walker", and my second born is going to be named "Larry Page Walker." :) (if you're asking yourself, "who is Larry Page?" google it)

Speaking of google. Check this out. It's Google's Top Ten Things in their philosophy. It's pretty cool. Some of them are definitely applicable to how a church should be run.
