New Quote

"It is clear that we live in an age in which the authority of Scripture in our lives has been replaced by the authority of the self: we are encouraged on all sides to take charge of our lives and use our own experience as the authoritative text by which to live."

-Eugene Peterson in his book, "Eat This Book"

Mark Twain Quote

I heard a new awesome quote in my Student Ministry Essentials class...

"At age 14 I couldn't believe how ignorant my father was. At age 21, after seven years had passed, I couldn't believe how much my father had learned in such a short period of time."

-Mark Twain

Love & Others

"I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10

I had a pretty cool realization tonight. I guess it wasn't really all that new, b/c I've kind of known these two things about myself, but I've never been able to put words around it like I did tonight. Here's what I've got...

I am most alive in two scenarios. One, when I'm in love. And two, when God is using me to help others.

That's it. That's me in a nutshell. Those are the two things I'm most alive during, that I enjoy the most, that I'd fight for, that I'd die for, that I'm obssesed with, that I would give anything to do... that's me.

When I'm in love... I mean seriously, for me, there is nothing more consuming. I want to redefine what it means to love... to marry... to know someone. Love is rediculously amazing. But there has to be a lot of wisdom that goes along with something so powerful though, right? B/c it is that powerful.

God using me to help others... God using me to build something in another person? God using me to encourage? To help heal? To help seal a decision? To help grow? To help become?... I mean is there anything more important? Anything cooler or exciting?

So that's me. Crazy huh? Yeah, I know, but I can't turn it off. It's me.

I bet you don't have to guess what time this post was written at huh? :) Goodnight.

Shrinking Yourself

This definitely goes along with my previous post, "Which is Riskier?"

I heard it last night...

"You don't do anyone a favor by shrinking in their presence."

Church Today

As usual, things were rocking at East Bayou this morning. Here were the main things I got from the sermon on marriage today...

"You are as close to God as you choose to be."

"Anything great has a tremendous price on it."

"God can do what you and I cannot do."

"Great marriages have nothing to do with luck. They take humility, honesty, selflessness, and the willingness to change."

"Love is a choice."

These are all out of context, but if you want to hear them in context then click here to go listen to the message. It should be up by Monday afternoon at the latest.

Cool Quote I Heard Tonight in the Car

"Just b/c it glitters, doesn't mean its gold."

How true.

Real vs Presented

"Don't spend your life comparing your insides to other people's outsides."

It's a quote I heard today in a sermon from Fellowship Church in Dallas, TX.

It was made in reference in how when we compare ourselves to other people it's easy to feel bad about ourselves b/c we're comparing the "real" us that we know, to the "presented" personality that we see in other people. It's not that the "presented" personality is wrong, but that it's not real.

For example, I'm sure a lot of people look at me and think, oh well Sean's got it all together. He's the pastor's kid. He finished college. He's got a good job. He brushes his teeth. He's polite, and he smiles a lot. His life must be perfect. Ha! (meaning, if you only knew)

Well thats what people from the outside see. Yeah if anyone compared their "real" life to my "presented" life then they'd definitely feel bad. BUT, the "presented" me isn't the real me. Or I guess I should say, the "complete" me. I've got my battles. I've got my insecurities. I've got my flaws. But only my close friends see them b/c that's who I choose to let in.

The point is this. Don't compare the "real" you to other "presented" people. You'll always lose. Compare yourself through your Creator's eyes! Christ's eyes are saying, "You are loved." "You are cherished." "You are wanted." "Warts and all."

Easier said than done though right? But man once we discover and live out that truth... wow!

Leave, Cleave & Weave Part 1

Our pastor (my dad) started a new sermon series this past Sunday on marriage. The sermon is loaded with helpful truths that can change a marriage. Here's the most impactful thing I got from it...

"Some people say, 'The grass is greener on the other side.' That's not true. The grass is greener where you water it."

Wow!

Movie Quote

I saw the movie, "Facing the Giants" a couple of weeks ago. Here's my favorite line in the movie...

"How can you be in love with someone you've never met?"

Love it!

In the movie, the character was asking that in reference to her future child, who she wanted to get pregnant for, but couldn't. I love it b/c it's applicable to more than that type of relationship.

Hmmm

"As we mature as Christians we should be thinking more and more of others and less and less of self. That is the best gage of maturity in Christ by far."

(not my quote)

P Fav

I got to talk to one of my favortie men in our church this week. We had a great conversation and here's the peice that he said, that I want to share...

"Knowledge + Experience = Wisdom"

Then I read this today...

"Blessed is the man who finds wisdom,
the man who gains understanding,

for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.

She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.

Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.

Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.

She is a tree of life to those who embrace her;
those who lay hold of her will be blessed.

By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations,
by understanding he set the heavens in place;

by his knowledge the deeps were divided,
and the clouds let drop the dew.

My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment,
do not let them out of your sight;

they will be life for you,
an ornament to grace your neck.

Then you will go on your way in safety,
and your foot will not stumble;

when you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Have no fear of sudden disaster
or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,

for the LORD will be your confidence
and will keep your foot from being snared."

Jeff Foxworthy Quote

"Debating our righteousness is like debating about who can jump farther over the Grand Canyon. It doesn't matter how far you can jump. You're both going to fall the same distance."
